[And that night, something very strange occurred.]

[ABOUT TIME. Marching up to the table!]

Hey, buddy! Where the heck am I? And who the heck are you?

[Grotesquely elongated fingers lift from the surface and gestures in the air between them, strange, nonsensical symbols and motions... finally, with easy slowness, they drop to the table, scooping up a deck of cards and holds them out for you.]

What is that, sign language? I didn't ask to play a game!

[The hands begin to shuffle it themselves leisurely.

A voice lifts, filling the silence. Low, heavy and strangely accented, it hurts your ears a little to listen to.]

Welcome, Thief.

Hey, who are you calling a thief?!

Welcome.

Shall we-

[It begins to lay out cards, face down.]

Welcome, Thief.

I'm not a thief!

Shall we see, then? What was taken.

[The hands uncurl slowly around the deck and points to the cards laying on the table.]

Are you even listening to me? Didn't steal from you. And even if I did, how are some stupid cards going to tell you anything?

[The hands settle, one over the other, in a style vaguely reminiscent of a rat.]

[Well I WAS going to leave, but that gesture is a little too familiar . . .]

Fine. You've got thirty seconds, and then I'm out of here.

[The hands lift and then finger walk across the table, fingernails clicking over the tops. It picks up on card - the Ace of Flames, then and then settles the next - the Ten of Flames, the Two of Empty lays across it, inverted. And alone sits the Seven of Death.

Finally it picks up the final card and lifts it between two fingers and holds it out to you.]

Here is your card, Thief.

Not a thief.

[takes the card anyway, frowning at it]

[The card shows a knight, bearing a shield against an unseen adversary. The knight’s eyes show no fear.]

Have a pleasant dream, Thief.

[You freeze. Everything stops, and then vanishes entirely.]

[You find yourself somewhere else.]
